Despite some of the strictest gun laws being levied on the citizens of Chicago, the city continues to be ranked among the highest in terms of murder rate in the country, with a person murdered approximately every 15 hours. This city is not alone in its struggle to suppress violent crimes. In a recent report from Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law, it is noted that Chicago along with Baltimore and Houston are going to be primarily responsible for the increase in murder in major cities.
The Huffington Post reports, “The report finds that just a few U.S. cities played an outsized role in the nationwide uptick in the murder rate in recent years and had a distorting effect on the overall murder rate.”
This, of course, begs an obvious question: if these three cities are responsible for an uptick in the country’s murder rate, what do they have in common? They’re all exclusively run by Democrats and have been for many years. Chicago hasn’t seen a Republican mayor in almost 90 years! The other cities don’t get much better.
The national murder rate is projected to increase by eight percent in the 2016 FBI statistics. It should be noted that crime as a whole has gone down over the past few decades. In fact, the Brennan Institute states, Americans are “safer today than they have been at almost any time,” despite this uptick.
The murder rate increase should be concerning to every American. Driving forces must recognize the necessity of a culture shift in Chicago and cities alike; until that happens, no progress will be made. It’s a sad state of affairs, but urgency is key.
This report just goes to show that when you have leftist political hacks running cities, things don’t go so well.
